Measurement

It is vitally important that measurement practice applied to buildings is both accurate and consistent. There are a number of situations that require a surveyor to measure and record dimensions from drawings and on site, depending on the stage of the project.

In 2003 an RICS report found that measurement was used inconsistently by professionals in the procurement process and that SMM7 no longer provided the level of detail needed in the procurement process. It was replaced by NRM2 which came into effect on 1 January 2013.

Cost information should be measured and presented in standard formats to ensure the accuracy of cost advice.
